To the Editor:

Re “How Garbo Learned to Stand on Her Head,” by Maureen Dowd (column, Oct. 9):

At 39, our mother was widowed with seven children ranging from 4 to 17. How did she cope? Yoga. Each morning, our mother crawled out of bed, stretched and stood on her head at the end of the hallway. No one interfered with this quiet, meditative time.

After the yoga, our mother proceeded downstairs, prepared breakfast and packed lunches while listening to a litany of spelling words or going over homework.

We seven marvel at a childhood with a mother who stood on her head every morning, went to the Y.M.C.A. for yoga twice a week and never let on that we were living below the poverty level.

Although able to demonstrate several yoga positions at 89, our mother now practices tai chi.
